A few questions.

Hello, I'm an aspiring independent game developer. I have recently visited a "for-profit" art school, even though for-profit schools often receive negative press for being expensive and unreliable for future employment. I was considering their mobile game design program, which deals with basic programming and art. The instructors seemed friendly and experienced, and they told me that most employers value portfolios and experience over college degrees. Is this true, or do they just want my money? In the end, would it be more preferable to get a degree that can get you into multiple job positions, such as computer science?

In short, if I want to be an independent game developer, what post-secondary courses do you recommend (computer science, art classes, etc.)? Should I avoid for-profit trade schools? And finally, in your opinion, what are the easiest programming languages to learn? Thanks in advance!

I think you should do a degree. Its a very competitive market place out there and somebody with 3-4 year degree would have it over someone who is trying to fast track it with a 12 month diploma in gaming. Its true that experience and portfolio have it over a degree, but its not easy to get the experience unless you have the qualifications and knowhow. Actually many positions require you have several years experience plus the degree, so at least if you cant make it through to your favorite job, you will have the knowledge to branch off and do something just as exciting. For example, you could build plugins for 3D animation software and get a job in the film industry! Or build your own 3D physics engine!
